UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES
AGENDA ITEM 1:
RISING EXTREME NATIONALISM IN EUROPE
AGENDA ITEM 2:
REFUGEE AND MIGRANT FLOWS IN LATIN AMERICA
INTRODUCTION TO THE COMMITTEE
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is dedicated to safeguarding the rights and well-being of refugees worldwide. In this session, the committee will address two pressing issues: the rise of extreme nationalism in Europe and the escalating refugee and migrant flows in Latin America.
In Europe, the surge of nationalist and populist movements has sparked increasing hostility towards refugees and asylum seekers. Many nations are implementing stricter immigration policies, citing security and cultural preservation concerns. These trends challenge international frameworks for refugee protection and risk undermining the principles of solidarity and shared responsibility.
Meanwhile, in Latin America, the region faces one of the most significant migration crises in its history. Millions of people are fleeing violence, poverty, and political instability in countries such as Venezuela, Honduras, and Nicaragua. These migrants often face perilous journeys, exploitation, and limited access to basic services in transit and destination countries.
