AGENDA ITEM 2:
THE QUESTION OF FRENCH POLYNESIA
INTRODUCTION TO THE COMMITTEE
The Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL) is a principal body of the United Nations General Assembly responsible for critical international matters like decolonization, humanitarian crises, peacekeeping, and conflict resolution. It aims to uphold sovereignty, self-determination, and human rights through collaborative efforts.
At ÅžehreminiMUN’25, SPECPOL will address key issues: territorial disputes in Southern Europe and the Balkans, and French Polynesia's quest for self-determination. The committee will examine the complex history and geopolitics behind contested borders, ethnic divisions, and sovereignty claims in the Balkans. Delegates will propose innovative strategies for resolving these disputes to enhance regional stability.
Regarding French Polynesia, the focus will be on balancing cultural preservation, political autonomy, and adherence to international laws. Delegates must address challenges faced by non-self-governing territories, respecting indigenous aspirations while adhering to global norms.
The discussions demand a scholarly approach, rooted in international law and diplomacy. Delegates will work toward equitable and practical resolutions that promote peace and multilateralism, reflecting the role of future diplomats in addressing global challenges.
